Possible Re-Opening Of One Lane On The A249

Possible Re-Opening Of One Lane On The A249

Highways England (HE) has confirmed that it is hoping to reopen one lane on the northbound A249 later this week, following completion of temporary works.

They have confirmed that it is "currently unsafe to reopen the slip road and inside lane as surveys have not confirmed the stability of the ground underneath the road and the adjacent void in the ground is a potential risk to drivers".

Timeline of work carried out so far

  • From Monday 11th to Friday 15th January, Southern Water installed a replacement water main under the A249
  • On Friday 15th January, the old water main was depressurised and as a consequence, a void started to appear.
  • Surveys could not be carried out until the level had receded. Pumping the water out could have made the void worse.
  • An initial pavement condition survey was carried out on the night of Friday 15th January to determine the extent of the void under the northbound carriageway.
  • A second survey was carried out this Monday (25th January) to determine the ground stability underneath lane 2 to ensure that it is safe to reopen.
  • While waiting for the technical teams to analyse the results, plans have been underway to explore other options to manage traffic.
  • Work is now ongoing to fill the void with concrete. HE anticipate that this work will be completed by tomorrow (Thursday 28th January) and this sgould then enable HE to re-open one lane of the northbound carriageway.

Why is it taking so long?

A team of Highways England specialist geotechnical and pavement engineers, and specialist contractors, have been carrying out surveys of the integrity of the carriageway to see if it is safe for traffic to use. These surveys are used to determine the physical properties of the ground underneath the road surface. They are carried out using a combination of non-invasive techniques, similar to an x-ray of the road and taking core earth samples. The results of these surveys will be analysed by a team of specialist engineers to build a profile of the ground conditions. Further surveys will be carried out over the next couple of weeks by specialist engineers to help HE to determine the scope and extent of the full repairs.

A further survey will be carried out on Tuesday 26th January.

We expect to receive a report next Friday 29th January in respect of all the investigations that have been carried out to determine what repairs are necessary. We will then set a timeframe which will take into account what work is required and how long the work will take.

No work will be taking place at the weekend. We will review the situation at the end of next week and I'll provide you with a further update.

The road will remain closed for the foreseeable future until we are satisfied that it can be re-opened safely.

Local anti-litter charity, Litter Angels, has installed two new litter bins in Iwade - one outside Costcutter on Ferry Road and one in Dunlin Walk, opposite the primary school.

The new bins, which will be emptied by Swale Borough Council, were requested by the owner of Costcutter and parents on the school run, who had noticed a build-up of litter in the two areas.

Gordon Henderson MP, who is also Chairman of Litter Angels, told SFM News "Litter Angels are always happy to have litter bins installed across Sittingbourne and Sheppey if they will reduce the amount of litter dropped on the ground. I hope that the residents and school children in Iwade will use the bins to keep their village clean and tidy."

A249 Misery Set To Continue Until The Weekend

A249 Misery Set To Continue Until The Weekend

The current problems on the A249 Northbound, just before Sittingbourne at the Key Street Underpass, look set to continue until the weekend.

In a Statement issued by Southern Water this afternoon to 106.9 SFM they confirm that: "works to replace a burst main on the A249 will take around five days, with completion on Sunday 17th January.
Water supplies remain unaffected and we would like to reassure our customers that we have a contingency plan in place to ensure we can continue to supply water as usual. We appreciate this has an had an impact on road users and apologise for the inconvenience to their daily journeys. Our crews are working around the clock to fix the problem as quickly as possible and we would like to thank drivers for their patience while this vital work is carried out".

Southern Water's engineers are working to repair the burst main and this will include the installation of a replacement water mains. All of this work is being undertaken beneath the carriageway and is not visible to road users. Using specialist equipment they are directionally drilling under the road with excavation works being carried out in adjacent fields.

After these works have been carried out Southern Water have confirmed that they "must ensure the water supply is safe for public consumption by carrying out strict water quality sampling. This will take between one to two days, depending on the results of the tests. Once the work is complete Highways England will have to carry out an assessment of the structural integrity of the highway to ensure it is safe for road users".

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of theft following a high-speed police chase on the M2 earlier today (Wednesday 6th January).

A police spokesperson told SFM News that: "Kent Police were alerted to a suspicious van on Thirlmere Avenue in Ramsgate at around 8.34am this morning. Patrols in the area located the van which failed to stop when requested to. The van then made its way to the M2 where it was tactically stopped by officers just before Medway Services on the London-bound carriageway between junctions 5 (A249 Sittingbourne) and 4 (A289 Gillingham). Two men have been arrested on suspicion of theft offences and currently remain in custody as enquiries continue".

It's believed that the police deployed a stinger in the operation to stop the vehicle. One lane was closed on the London-bound carriageway which caused lengthy delays in the area earlier.

USB Cable Fault Causes Bedroom Fire In Iwade

USB Cable Fault Causes Bedroom Fire In Iwade

Kent Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire in a first floor bedroom of a semi-detached property on Purple Emperor Grove in Iwade earlier this afternoon (Friday 1st January).

On arrival fire crews found a bedroom on fire and used breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet, thermal imaging camera and a ventilation fan to tackle the blaze and clear the property of smoke.

The fire was accidental and it's believed it was caused by a cable, similar to a USB cable, that was plugged in to the power where the wire insulation had completely being burnt off.
