Police Cadets Help On 'Speedwatch' Duties

More than 400 vehicles were speed checked by Kent Volunteer Police Cadets on Saturday (27th April).

The cadets, based with the force's Sittingbourne troop, attended four locations across Sittingbourne and Sheppey for a day of road safety checks.

Each used speed guns to record a vehicle's speed and provided words of advice to drivers who had been stopped due to their speeding.

The roads checked were Woodstock Road in Sittingbourne, Chestnut Street in Danaway and both Scocles Road and Minster Roads, in Minster-On-Sea.

Suggestions Requested For Community Tree Planting

Local MP, Gordon Henderson is joining over 500 other MPs to plant four trees as part of the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy, a network of forest conservation initiatives to mark Her Majesty's lifetime of service to the Commonwealth.

He is now looking for suggestions on where to plant the trees; two in Sittingbourne and two in Sheppey.

The trees, two silver birch and two rowan, donated in partnership with the Woodland Trust, Sainsbury's and ITV, will be planted during a tree planting ceremony between 22nd October and 9th November.

Early Morning Collision Closes Road

The A2500 Lower Road, in Minster-On-Sea on the Isle Of Sheppey, will be CLOSED until 1.00pm this afternoon (Thursday 16th August) following a collision earlier on this morning.

The road is closed, in both directions, between the Cowstead Corner Roundabout and Thistle Hill Way following the head-on car crash between a silver Skoda Fabia and a red Toyota Hilux at around 4.00am.

Crews Tackle Warden Bay Cornfield Fire

Kent Fire And Rescue Service (KFRS) crews have been dealing with a fire in a field of around 1000 square metres of standing and cut corn, near Warden Bay Road in Leysdown.

The call was received shortly before 11am this morning (Friday 27th July) and firefighters have been tackling the fire using breathing apparatus.

Four fire engines were initially in attendance at the incident, though has now been reduced to two engines.

Crews have been working with the landowner to create fire breaks to prevent further fire spread.

MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey Gordon Henderson's Facebook page may have fallen foul of new GDPR regulations.

In a Facebook post commenting about the death of 100-year old widow Zofija Kaczan, who relocated to Britain from Poland after the Second World War and was cruelly mugged whilst walking to church in Derby recently, Mr Henderson's page asked for the re-establishment of capital punishment.

Man Arrested Following Sheppey Prison Visit

Officers from Kent Police have arrested a man from the Croydon area after he visited a prison on the Isle Of Sheppey.

The 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of trying to take prohibited items into HMP Standford Hill after he was seen acting suspiciously near the prison.

Officers arrested the man at around 7.30pm on Sunday (11th February) and found a pillowcase hidden nearby. Inside the pillowcase were items including a mobile phone, charger, alcohol, razor blades, tobacco and 50 tablets which were believed to be Oxymethelone.

Jail For Thief Who Failed To Steal Sheppey ATMs

A thief has been jailed for ramming a stolen telehandler through the wall of a Sheppey supermarket in a failed attempt to steal two cash machines.

Following the incident Kieron Armstrong, 39, of Brays Mead in Harlow, Essex, drove a car at speeds of up to 150mph to try to escape police before crashing into a roundabout and being arrested.

He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment after pleading guilty to attempted theft, damaging property, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. The judge also banned him from driving for eight years.

MP To Take On Assault Course Challenge

Local charity, Litter Angels, has registered a team of six people, including our local MP Gordon Henderson, to tackle an assault course challenge.

The team also includes Litter Angels trustees, Jess McMahon and Samantha Williams along volunteers Katherine Windsor, Gemma Bolton and Jenni Cawdell.

The challenge will be taking place on Sunday 8th October at Betteshanger Country Park near Deal and consists of over 20 different obstacles including tunnels, balance beams, water jumps and a tyre wall.

The North Kent Coast from Kemsley to Seasalter, including Sheerness, Minster, Queenborough, Leysdown, Sittingbourne, and Faversham are on flood risk.

An Environment Agency spokesman told SFM News that: "From Wednesday (11th January) evening through to Saturday, spring tides combined with positive surges and strong wind conditions are raising the risk of some coastal flood impacts. This flood alert is therefore likely to remain in force until Saturday".

Arrests Made In Sheppey Police Operation

Eight men have been arrested, in connection with the supply of heroin and cocaine, on the Isle of Sheppey and bailed pending further enquiries.

Officers from Kent Police's Operation Jupiter team executed search warrants in both New Street and Queensway in Sheerness last Wednesday (4th May). The warrants were linked to an investigation into an organised crime network with links to Liverpool.

The suspects were all arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. The men, aged between 22 and 36, have now all been bailed until Tuesday 30th August.
