Workers at the UK's largest paper mill, DS Smith in Kemsley, are facing potential redundancies following proposals to shut down one of the machines based there.

Workers at the UK's largest paper mill, DS Smith in Kemsley, are facing potential redundancies following proposals to shut down one of the machines based there.

The company are proposing the closure of Paper Machine 4 (PM4) and an investment of £20 million into Paper Machine 6 (PM6) at the Ridham Avenue plant.

DS Smith have not yet revealed how many jobs could be affected only that they wish “to align the site structure with future operational requirements” and these would be subject to consultation with employees and union representatives.

The Managing Director of Paper In Europe at DS Smith, Rogier Gerritsen, told SFM News: "We are announcing a significant investment proposal for the Kemsley Paper Mill to ensure we are delivering the right products to our customers and remain cost competitive. At the same time, we recognise how difficult part of these proposals will be for some of our colleagues and our immediate focus is on supporting them through a formal consultation process."

He went on to add: "We are of the view that these proposals would support the realisation of Kemsley Paper Mill’s position as a cost-effective, future-ready mill whilst continuing to create long-term value for our people, our customers and the local community.”

DS Smith began consulting with employees earlier this year at its site in Launceston in Cornwall, where it has been a significant local employer for nearly 60 years. It recently said the "difficult decision" to shut Launceston was made "after careful consideration of counter proposals raised," adding production at the site will finish in November.

The company noted it recognised the decision was "disappointing for those impacted," adding it would support its employees "through this period".
