Council Make "No Trick Or Treat" Poster Available

People who don’t want to take part in Halloween activities this year can let others know thanks to a poster designed by Swale Borough Council (SBC).

The council say: "Whilst some people enjoy Halloween, it’s not for everyone, as not everyone feels safe opening the door to strangers in the dark. People may be vulnerable, have religious reasons not to take part, or not have the disposable income for decorations and sweets."

Swale are once again working with Kent police, Kent Neighbourhood Watch and Kent Fire and Rescue Service to share a poster that households can use to show they do not want any trick or treaters to visit them this Halloween.

It is easy to use - simply download and print out the poster www.swale.gov.uk/NTTHalloween and put it up in a visible location, such as the door or window of your home.

Or you can collect a printed-out poster from Swale House’s reception in Sittingbourne, Alexander Centre in Faversham or Sheppey Gateway in Sheerness.

Parents need to tell their children that if they see the no trick or treaters poster, they should leave the house and respect the household’s wishes.

To avoid any antisocial behaviour, parents should make sure children don't take flour or eggs out with them when trick or treating.

Cllr Hannah Perkin, chair of the Community Committee at SBC, told SFM News: " While many households are decorating their homes, making their costumes or buying sweets for the trick or treaters, some in Swale may be worrying about Halloween instead. Whether they don’t feel safe opening the door to strangers, have health issues, are going through financial hardship or don’t take part for religious reasons, we need to respect their right to sit out of the festivities.

While many turn off lights in their home so they don’t get trick or treaters to their door, these posters are a clear sign, in writing, that they aren’t taking part and will help make the householders feel more at ease this Halloween. It is also important that everyone has responsible fun on Halloween, while everyone loves treats – the tricks, like throwing eggs, is not acceptable and can ruin people’s nights, so please be respectful and stay safe."

If you witness any antisocial behaviour you are asked to call 101 or report it to Kent police online at their website: https://www.kent.police.uk/
