Brickies Make Kent Senior Cup Final
Sittingbourne finally reached the final of the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday night (14th April), after defeating Cray Wanderers (at Bromley) 4-3 on penalties after drawing 1-1 after extra time.
Cray took a 5 minute lead when a Jack Clark free kick deceived Sittingbourne keeper Deren Ibrahim. Ryan Golding then caught Des Boateng in possession and crashed the ball past Cray keeper Jack Smelt for a 36 minute equaliser. Cray nearly re-took the lead just 3 minutes into the second half but George Porter's shot bounced off the left hand post. Golding did well to round the Cray keeper on 70 minutes but he too hit a post with his shot and it was all square at the end of normal time.
Nick Reeves nearly won the game for the Brickies right at the end of the first half of extra time but his shot smashed against a post. Just as in the quarter final last week against Tonbridge, the tie went to penalties. Colin Richmond and Nick Reeves scored for Sittingbourne, as did Colin Luckett and Des Boateng for Cray, but then Hicham Akhazzan fired his effort way over the bar, but Deren Ibrahin came to Sittingbourne's aid as he saved ex-Brickie John Guest's kick. Karl Dent converted for Sittingbourne as did Rob Quinn for Cray. Up stepped Billy Manners and scored his penalty. It now rested on George Porter to score and Ibrahim again made a good save to win the tie for Sittingbourne.
The first team's next match, in the Ryman League Division 1 South, is this coming Saturday (17th April) away to Walton Casuals. Kick off at 3:00pm.
Sittingbourne RUFC In Double Defeat
Sittingbourne RUFC concluded their 2009/10 league campaign on Saturday (10th April) with a narrow home defeat 26-33 against Cranbrook, which doubled up as the Kent Salver semi-final.
The widely anticipated close game lived up to all expectations with the outcome in doubt until the last play of the game.
Sittingbourne finished third in the Kent League 1 Division table, looking forward to the next season's campaign later this year.
Gills Finally Secure Dixon On Loan
Gills boss, Mark Stimson, has finally secured the signature of Charlton Athletic striker Chris Dickson after he agreed to join Gillingham FC for the remainder of the season.
The 25-year-old, a firm favourite with Gills supporters, has struggled to win a permanent place in Charlton’s first team squad since signing from Dulwich Hamlet in 2008. He recently spent a loan spell at Bristol Rovers and became a popular figure among Gillingham fans after finishing the 2007/08 season as top scorer with 11 goals during a previous loan spell at the club.
